Click to connect with other parentsPosted on Fri, June 12th, 2009

email: robertsk@cdparentpages.com It's not much of a stretch to say that the Internet has changed the way many of us parent. Homework help and entertainment for kids is a click away, and even though our pediatricians warn us not to get carried away with making Web diagnoses, what desperate parent hasn't done a quick online search for poison ivy/lyme disease/swine flu symptoms?
My own Google history exposes my parental anxieties. Recent searches include "fern toxic reaction," "kids boredom ideas," and even this precious nugget: "Splenda allergy kid vomit." Although I know when an emergency requires a call to the real authorities, I find some comfort in the fact that if the answers are out there, then that means there are other parents asking the same questions.
At Capital District Parent Pages, we want to connect area parents with one another and to that broader parenting community that can be found online. At our Web site
www.cdparentpages.com, we have a number of parenting forums started, and we are counting on you to help grow them into a vibrant online community. We invite you to use the forums to start playgroups and babysitting co-ops and share tips for keeping a hectic household running smoothly. We have a place for you to trade ideas about family-friendly activities in the Capital District, and for area moms groups to post their updated schedules. There are also forums for posting questions and concerns about your child's developmental stage – from newborn to teen.
Signing up to use the forums at
www.cdparentpages.com is easy. Just click on the forum link and go to "register" to fill in your user name and password, and then you're ready to go.
The easy access to so many forms of digital media can have a dark side, though, especially when it falls into the hands of young people just learning the types of consequences that come with bad decisions. We recently posted a story at
www.cdparentpages.com that takes a look at how the trend of "sexting," or sending racy digital images and messages, can have emotional costs that go beyond mere embarrassment if those messages fall into the wrong hands. That story can be found by clicking on the "Features" tab at the top of the Web site. Our goal isn't to terrify parents into banning children and teens from using cell phones (their usefulness is a whole different topic of discussion and debate), but to remind them to encourage responsible use of all digital media.
Parenting is a trial-and-error journey, and we invite our readers to share their experiences along the way at
www.cdparentpages.com. As always, let us know how you think we're doing covering the topics that are important to you and what you would like to see in future issues. You can post your ideas and photos in our online forums or mail them to Capital District Parent Pages, 125 Adams St., Delmar, NY 12054, or e-mail us at
