The Joys of Art and Music

There are a number of summer camp programs across the Capital District that have found a great way to incorporate music and arts in summer camps. Many of these camps are available to parents for preschool age children and becoming increasingly more popular to parents.
For many parents a summer camp program is an extension of where their children attend school throughout the year. One example is the Waldorf schools of Saratoga and Albany, however program director Linda Stallard said that parents also use the summer camp programs as a good way to see if the school is a good fit for their child during the traditional school year.
The Waldorf philosophy of values such as respect for self and others, universal to all religious and spiritual traditions, are upheld in the classrooms. The summer program for preschoolers, called the “Summer Garden Camp for Children,” is for children ages 3 to 10 and will run for six weeks over the summer with each session being one week. The school will incorporate woodworking, gardening, crafts, water play, puppet shows, walks and even one filed trip.
For a brochure or for more information, please contact Linda Stallard at 584-7643, extension 18. Or you can visit the school’s website at www.waldorfsaratoga.com for information on dates, pricing and how to enroll.
If you are looking for something centered on music, a great program to check out is the early childhood music and movement summer classes at  Music Together of the Mohawk Valley. Like, the Waldorf School, it is a great opportunity for parents to see what the program is about before enrolling in a regular school year session. Carol Jurs, who runs the summer program at Music Together, said that they have found that incorporating music into preschoolers lives teachers much more than music.
“The children learn about linguistics, community, self confidence and even comprehension,” said Jurs.
Music Together is a movement and music approach to early childhood music education for infants, toddlers, preschools and kindergarten children, which is enhanced through playful activities in mixed-age classes. The program was developed in 1985 in order to assist families, caregivers and educators in stimulating and supporting a child’s musical environment. Jurs said basic music competence is developed through learning experiences rather than through structured musical learning concepts, which promotes and nurtures musical growth.
The summer program will teach children through using egg shakers, parachutes, scarves, sing along, percussion instruments, and free dance.
Information can be found at www.musicboxarts.com. The session area week long and run through the summer. You can also call Carol Jurs at 393-9580.
Another non-traditional school that offers a summer camp that is the Albany Montessori School, which offers a full day filled based on the Montessori philosophy.
The program includes activities that are approached in a way that conveys respect for the child and the environment.
Deb Boswell, program director, said the summer camp provides many current students and new students an opportunity to learn and explore in an environment that celebrates autonomy and independence. The summer sessions run week to week with the options of signing up for multiple sessions.
“They come out of the program with more of a sense of motivation that helps them to build confidence and go further,” said Boswell.
Children will enjoy outdoor play as well as learning through music, arts, and even enhancements such as Spanish and Yoga. To learn more about the program to get information on specific dates and process visit www.albanymotessori.org or call Deb Boswell at 458-2851.
Other popular arts and crafts camps to check out are The Music Studio at 459-7799, The World of Dance at 210-7599, and the Susan Odell Taylor School for Children at 274-4994.
