Make Dad's day: Start a local Father's Day tradition

Finding things to do on Mother’s Day is easy.  It seems like every restaurant offers a brunch special, and the Tulip Festival is conveniently held on Mother’s Day weekend every year.  Father’s Day is another thing all together. When was the last time you saw an advertisement for a Father’s Day brunch?
Fortunately, Father’s Day this year falls just one day before the official start of summer, and in the Capital District, there is no shortage of summer fun.  On this, the 100th anniversary of the very first Father’s Day celebrated June 19, 1910, plan to spend a little quality time with that special dad in your life. Maybe it’s even time to start a new tradition.
The following are some ideas for an outing with dad on his big day:

For the sports lover

Take him out to the ball game!  Our very own minor league baseball team, the Tri-City ValleyCats, is playing the Connecticut Tigers at 5 p.m. at their home field in Troy.  Enjoy the Family Four Pack, which includes four tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas for $25.  Children 3 and older require tickets.
On Father’s Day, everyone gets to be a player, with the field open to play catch from 4-5 p.m. before the game and a chance for kids to run the bases directly after the game.
Call 629-2287 to buy tickets in advance.

For the nature lover

If you haven’t visited the Discovery Center at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve, here is your chance.  Located at 195 New Karner Road, the Discovery Center highlights the natural history of the Pine Bush, “the best remaining  example in the world of inland pine barrens.”
The Discovery Center is the gateway to the preserve and is always free.  In addition, events are planned year round.  This Father’s Day, the preserve is hosting a 1-mile Father-Daughter Hike.  The cost is $2 per person or $5 per family.
A description of the event follows:
“Our experts will guide you through this one mile hike over rolling sand dunes where you will discover Pine Bush natural history, seasonal surprises and transformations. Please remember to wear sturdy walking shoes, long pants and bring drinking water.”
The hike begins at 1 p.m. and pre-registration is required.  Contact the Albany Pine Bush Preserve at www.albanypinebush.org for information.

For the music lover

Albany’s annual Father’s Day celebration at the Riverfront is a concert to remember.  This free event combines “a highly acclaimed musical performance” with an exciting fireworks display at nightfall.  Bring the whole family to the Albany Riverfront for a night under the stars.
Special ground rules include no outside food, beverages, coolers, glass containers of any kind or pets (excludes ADA defined service animals). Security personnel reserve the right to inspect any bag, container or package and confiscate any prohibited or illegal items.  For concert details call 434-2032.

For the thrill seeker

Take Dad on a day
trip with the whole family to Great Escape and Splashwater Kingdom in Queensbury.  Rides for preschoolers through adults, live shows and a huge water park are all included in the price of admission.
This year, there are two promotions for Father’s Day.  First is the “free friend with a season pass” – essentially, Dad’s admission is free if one of his kids has a season pass.  One “free friend” per season pass is admitted. June 20 is also Read and Ride day at Great Escape.  When a child brings his or her library card, admission is $19.99 – a $10 savings.
Season passes can be purchased online at www.sixflags.com/greatescape and can be used at all 14 Six Flags locations.

For the beach bum

One of the best kept secrets of the Capital District is Snyder’s Lake Beach (officially Dedrick Recreation Park) in North Greenbush.  This park has a beautifully kept and life-guarded lake beach, brand-new playground, sand volleyball court, large pavilion and clean washhouse. Best of all, it costs only $5 per car for a day’s visit, and it’s free for North Greenbush residents. What more can you ask for?
The beach opens for the 2010 season on Saturday, June 19, just in time for Father’s Day, and it is open every day.  Be sure to take along a little ice-cream money, as most afternoons bring a visit from the Mr. Ding-a-Ling ice cream truck.
The beach is located at 5 Camp Scully Way, North Greenbush. Call 283-8807 for information.
Cross your fingers that the weather cooperates this June 20 so we can celebrate the dads in our lives and do justice to a 100-year-old tradition.
