email: sabbatinod@spotlightnews.com The Voorheesville Central School District hired its second new official from Shenendehowa this summer on Friday, Aug. 7, according to officials.
Brian Whitley will serve as principal of the middle school after a special meeting of the Board of Education.
Teresa Thayer Snyder, superintendent of the Voorheesville Central School District, said she is excited to work with Whitley.
“We really want to build a cohesive leadership team,” she said. “I think we’re off to a good start in that direction.”
Snyder, also from the Shenendehowa Central School District, has been superintendent since March 27. She said transitioning from the Shenendehowa school district was a lot of work, but she now has settled in at Voorheesville.
“For a while, I felt like I was doing two jobs at once,” Snyder said.
Whitley has worked as assistant principal of Koda Middle School, and his background is in guidance, counseling and administration, according to information from the district.
"I am delighted that our administrative team is now in place and that Voorheesville Middle School attracted such a strong pool of candidates. Mr. Whitley will add much to our mission as we move into this school year and for many years to come," Snyder said in a written statement.
Tom Reardon who was hired as principal at the elementary school July 1, is also a part of that team, she said.
Snyder said she is preparing for the upcoming year with optimism.
“I’m very interested to hear from the students,” she said.
She is also hoping to start meeting with faculty and staff.
Snyder was a principal at Glenmont Elementary School in Bethlehem, a superintendent in Brittonkill Central School District in Rensselaer County, and has worked in education for “most of my life,” she said. She has worked for the Catholic Diocese and at Emma Willard private school as well.
“It’s going great. It’s a wonderful place,” Snyder said.
She said Voorheesville is known for its high standards, and that is something to celebrate, rather than be anxious about, coming into her first school year.
She said the schools will be a place where students are “cherished and challenged.”
She supports broad teaching strategies, not reductionism, and acknowledges, “there’s just so much to be learned.”
“It comes down to the quality of teaching and learning,” she said.
Whitley was hired at $92,000, Reardon at $75,200 and Snyder at $150,000 per year.
